In this 2014 publication by the National Bureau of Economic Research, researchers conducted a multinational study to determine the quality of managerial practices in private, public, and charter schools. Researchers found that effective, autonomous school leaders were the main drivers of management quality, and higher management quality correlated strongly with better educational outcomes. The authors observed that, while schools are less inclined to adopt traditional managerial processes overall, charter schools received the highest management quality scores among the school types.
