Play-based learning in kindergarten is often placed at odds with the Common Core, as some favor the former as a more developmentally appropriate approach to learning. In this article published by the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, the author demonstrates that the two are wholly compatible and encourages teachers to employ traditional teaching strategies to support Common Core concepts for our littlest learners. Further, the author notes that early literacy-an important element of the Common Core State Standards for kindergarten-increases the likelihood a student will graduate from high school.  Read it here.
